In America last July, a man in a wheelchair was taken for a high-speed ride when the handlebars of his chair became entangled in the front grille of a lorry.
Ben Carpenter’s wheelchair was scooped-up as he passed in the front of a lorry leaving a petrol station. The lorry driver oblivious to the fact that he had a passenger, who was fortunately held in his chair by a seat-belt.
Fortunately, he was spotted by passing motorists who informed police, they tracked them down and found the man unhurt but still attached to the front of the lorry.
According to police in the town of Paw Paw, Michigan, Mr Carpenter had told them “it was quite a ride”, but only complained about having spilt his drink.
The lorry reached speeds of 50mph as it proceeded along the Red Arrow Highway. After several miles the driver pulled into a depot where police informed him of the man attached to his front end. The driver refused to believe it until he saw it for himself the police said.
Mr Carpenter said “It’s fast, I know that, I was probably thinking that he [the driver] is going to keep going, non-stop anywhere, go 50-60 miles somewhere. I mean I would have been dead way before that.”
