The Fainting Goats

This group of goats in Tennessee are known as fainting goats which have an hereditary genetic disorder known as Myotonia Congenita.

The goats are a slightly smaller version of the standard goat which appear to faint whenever they are startled.  They suffer with a condition which causes them to stop moving, stiffen and usually fall down on the ground.

It is believed that back in the 1800’s, farmers and shepherds kept the goats with their flocks to help in predator attacks.  The theory being that as the goats become startled and fainted, the sheep had a chance to escape as wolves would focus on the goats rather than the fleeing sheep.
