Swimming In Sea-Scum

Joy Ryder - Thursday 03.04.08, 19:55pm

foam beachThis picture is of the strange phenomenon which took place in Australia.

Some scientists claim that the foam is created by the impurities in the ocean, such as sea salts, chemicals, dead plants, decomposed fish and excretions from seaweed.  They are all churned-up together by powerful currents which cause the water to form bubbles.  These bubbles then stick to each other as they are carried below the surface by the current towards the shore.

As a wave starts to form on the surface, the motion of the water causes the bubbles to swirl upwards and, and massed together, they become foam.

In this case, storms off the New South Wales Coast and further north of Queensland had created a huge disturbance in the ocean, hitting a stretch of water where there was particular high amounts of the substance which forms the bubbles.

However, there are various opinions on what actually causes this filthy foaming scum, but it doesn’t seem to stop people actually wanting to swim in it, no doubt having the occasional gulp of that lovely bubbly foam sliding down their throats, nice!

The photographs were taken by Bill Counsell a commercail photographer.
