Impaled On A Fence

Joy Ryder - Friday 25.04.08, 12:19pm

julioThis is a picture of one of the most bizarre accidents I have ever seen, which happened back in 1989 in New York.

It happened on an early Saturday evening in as a young man, Julio Castillo, 15-years-old, was playing ball with some friends outside his apartment in Sunnyside, New York.

He was climbing over a wrought-iron fence to retrieve his ball when he slipped and the a square spike, about 1 inch wide, entered his neck and came out of his mouth, only narrowly missing his jugular vein.

Rescuers had to tie the teenager to the fence “to keep his weight from making the wound larger or possibly fracturing his neck” said a firefighter.

The firefighter added “He was letting us know he was in pain.  He was moaning and screaming.  But he really couldn’t yell that loud because there was a one-inch spike coming out of his mouth.”

The boy was protected by coats from the sparks as a section of the fence was cut away so that he Julio could be taken to hospital.

He was expected to make a full recovery.

It goes to show that all points of possible impalement, no matter where they are SHALLBE COVERED AND PROTECTED. This could have been a fatality and the park could have been responsible.
