According to experts in the field of science, cow flatulence is a problem threatening the future of the entire planet.
At the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, experts say that the average cow contributes as much to global warming as a family car that travels 12,000 miles.
“Cattle and agriculture can be a very serious contributor towards the problem”, said Professor Harry McArdle.
Methane is 24 times more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide, and is thought to contribute 18 percent towards the global warming effect.
The institute is actively working on a feed additive. The chemical, Furic acid, is added to the food which traps hydrogen produced by the digestive system and stops it being turned into methane.
Apparently, the results were very positive in lambs but unfortunately the cows have proven more stubborn and the flatulence has not substantially reduced.
The New Zealand Government were supposedly considering taxing the farmers on the herds’ methane output but there was too much opposition to this suggestion!
