Conjoined Twins Refuse To Be Seperated

Joy Ryder - Sunday 09.03.08, 17:09pm

twinsThe world’s oldest conjoined twins, Abigail and Brittany Hensel, have reportedly refused an operation to separate them even if it was possible.

The girls who have just celebrated their 18th birthday’s said “We don’t know any other way of living and don’t want to go through surgery, said Abigail. Even if it worked, we wouldn’t be able to do all the things we do now.”

Abigail and Brittany are joined at the chest down and share two legs and two arms. They have two hearts and each has one pair of lungs but only one liver, bladder, ribcage and pelvis, and they each can only control one side of their body and cannot feel the other.

They may share one body, but these astonishing girls play basketball, volleyball, swim and even drive a car. The girls are really looking forward to going to college, getting married and having children of their own.

The girls each have their own tastes in clothes and have different personalities and said they “take it in turns to decide what to put on. We’re totally different. we bargain with each other and say if you do this, I’ll give you that. We want to be mums but haven’t thought how it would work.”

One set of twins in every 50,000 is born joined in some way and of these just 1 percent survive beyond their first birthdays, which goes to show how incredible these girls are.

Doctors believe that an operation to separate them would be impossible as they share so many vital organs and that even if it was attempted the chances are that they would both die.

The girls parents made the decision not to have the girls separated at birth and are said to have never regretted the decision knowing the risks that were involved. Their mother, Patsy said “I kiss Abigail and then Brittany and give them a hug. It’s like that every time I pick them up from school, two kisses and one hug.” She added “They are the most beautiful children in the world.”

What a humbling story, these girls are absolutely amazing, they’ve just got on with their lives and are enjoying themselves. I hope that they do marry and have their own families, they deserve all the happiness in the world.
